General Properties of Solids

Matter can be classified in to different forms based on the properties like appearance, luster, texture, state, solubility, Density, transperancy etc. There are basically three states of matter : Solid, liquid and gas.

General characteristics of solid state  : Solid state is determined by following characteristics. They are  :

  • 1. Definite mass, volume and shape : Solids have definite shape for eg : table, chair etc. They have a fixed volume and mass.
  • 2. Fixed positions of particles :The particles of a solid remain fixed at their position.
  • 3. Incompressible : Solids are incompressible and rigid. They can not be compressed easily.
  • 4. High density  : Solids posses high density. As the particles are inseperable therefore solids have more mass to volume ratio, which make them more dense.
